Chapter 18

“They must be in the dip on the other side of this hill,” Maria del Mar said. “I didn’t even see them.”

All of them lay in the sand, keeping their heads down.

“Anybody see them?” Simon asked.

“It’s Tesca,” Shiraq said. “I caught a glimpse and recognized one of them from the training. A tall girl with tattoos.”

“Lena Tesca Dorothea-Savage,” Ramona said. “She’s a nasty piece of work.”

As she spoke, Ramona was already at Li’s side, injecting his wound with coagulant and anesthetic. Maria del Mar was crawling on her belly to the top of the hill. Simon grabbed the spear and looked around them.

Behind them and to their left was a rock outcrop. When they had walked past it, Simon hadn’t paid it much mind as it seemed to just be a rock. But looking back, he could see that it had an entryway with a steel door.

“How’s the bleeding?” he whispered to Ramona.

“Think I’ve got it stopped,” she said. “But he needs staples. I’d rather not do it right here while Lena and her walruses stalk us.”

“Ramona and Shiraq, drag Li to that rock structure. Alvaro, get over there and get it open. Put your thieving skills to work. There might be something in the medkit you can use as a lockpick,” Simon said, and then passed Maria del Mar the spear that had brought down Li.

Maria del Mar had already slithered up the hill on her belly and was carefully peering over it.

“They’re fanning out and coming up the hill,” she said. “They’re being cautious in case we counterattack. They might not know how many we are or even how badly they hit Li.”

Simon glanced back. Alvaro was already working on the door, and Ramona and Shiraq were halfway there, struggling to drag Li’s unconscious body through the soft sand.

Activate hands, sixty-five percent, Simon thought and his hands immediately began to glow.

He dug scoops of sand and quickly created half a dozen small, molten glass balls. Then, he created another scoop-like racket for his right hand, like he’d used with the Minotaur.

“When I saw ‘now’, you jump up and throw the spear,” Simon said. “If you hit someone, great, if not it will at least distract them. As soon as your spear is gone, run over to the rock.”

“I grew up in Mare, I know how to throw a spear,” Maria del Mar said.

Looking back to the stone, Simon saw that they were inside, and the door was mostly closed. He rolled down the dune a little ways so that his head wouldn’t be visible over top of it. Then, he ran as quickly as he could, putting some distance between him and Maria del Mar. She also moved a short distance away so that she wouldn’t appear where they had just been.

“Now,” Simon mouthed to her.

Maria del Mar jumped to her feet and threw the spear. Then, she dropped down again behind the sand dune, rolled to the bottom, and bolted toward the rock. Simon leapt to his feet and took half a second to look around.
